Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Two hits were all the Clinton LumberKings could muster in a 7-3 loss to the Burlington Bees on Monday night at Ashford University Field. Despite drawing 10 walks, the LumberKings (3-2, 42-33) could not overcome a five-run sixth inning by the Bees (1-4, 31-43).
Burlington started the scoring in the top of the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Franklin Torres and added their second run of the night on a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth by Connor Fitzsimmons.
LumberKings starting pitcher Oliver Jaskie kept the deficit at two through the fifth inning but failed to make it through the sixth. The lefty turned in 5.1 innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out four.
In the top of the sixth, the Bees broke out for five runs. The first two batters of the inning singled and two batters later Fitzsimmons drew a nine pitch walk from Jaskie (3-7), forcing him from the game. Adonis De La Cruz followed out of the bullpen and following a strikeout allowed a grand slam home run to Jimmy Barnes that put the game out of reach. Torii Hunter Jr. capped the scoring with an RBI single.
The LumberKings tallied one run against Bees starter Oliver Ortega despite failing to collect a hit against him. In the bottom of the fourth, three walks, a wild pitch, and throwing error by Bees catcher Keinner Pina led to Clinton's first run of the night.
Ortega earned the win for Burlington for a five-inning outing in which he allowed one unearned run while allowing no hits, walking six, and striking out seven.
The LumberKings did not record their first hit of the night until the bottom of the seventh, when Joseph Rosa rolled an RBI single through the right side of the infield as part of a two-run rally.
Clinton rallied again in the bottom of the ninth putting two men on and bringing the tying run into the on-deck circle when Rosa bounced into a game ending double play.
The LumberKings will meet the Burlington Bees for the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday night at Ashford University Field.
