West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps starters held their own against Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish and took advantage of a throwing error to beat the South Bend Cubs by a score of 4-2 on Monday at Four Winds Field.
Darvish, starting the ballgame for South Bend as part of a Major League rehab assignment, tossed five innings while striking out five batters in the contest. His only blemish was when Joey Morgan slammed a mammoth solo homer to left field - his third of the season - to give the "Caps their first run of the evening.
South Bend catcher Miguel Amaya tied the game with a run-scoring double in the fifth, then gave the Cubs a seventh-inning 2-1 lead with an RBI-single. In the eighth, Jose Azocar tied the game with a single to score Brock Deatherage, who walked to lead off the frame. After Azocar stole second and third base, Rey Rivera walked to bring up Colby Bortles. With runners at second and third, Cubs third baseman Austin Filiere fielded a ground ball and unleashed a wild throw to first base, allowing both runners to score and West Michigan to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, South Bend put runners at second and third with one out before Will Vest relieved a struggling Felix Viloria to strike out Filiere and Roberto Caro to end the threat. In the ninth, Vest allowed a single and a walk to bring the potential tying run to the plate before retiring Brandon Hughes on strikes to seal the victory.
Viloria (2-1) picks up his second win, while Cubs reliever Javier Assad (4-4) takes the loss after giving up three unearned runs in three frames of work. The Whitecaps improve to 39-36 with the victory, while the Cubs fall to 38-36 with the defeat. Anthony Pereira collected a pair of doubles for the Whitecaps in the win.
