ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps fought off snowflakes, a 4-run deficit and a 3-run margin to tie the game in the eighth inning and again in the ninth before falling to the Lake County Captains, 8-7, in 10 innings in their season opener.
ON DECK: The series shifts to Fort Wayne, where the TinCaps will play their 2016 home opener at Parkview Field on Saturday, starting at 6:05 p.m. Fans in attendance will receive a TinCaps Magnet Schedule, compliments of Parkview Health, while Postgame Fireworks presented by Auto Care on the Go will follow the last out.
PADRES PROSPECTS: Tonight's starting pitcher, Austin Smith, is 1 of 9 TinCaps ranked in the Padres' Top 30 prospects, per MLB.com: SS Ruddy Giron (No. 4), RHP Austin Smith (No. 8), Logan Allen (No. 9), RHP Jacob Nix (No. 10), OF Michael Gettys (No. 11), RHP Enyel De Los Santos (No. 14), RHP Phil Maton (No. 22), C Austin Allen (No. 27), RHP J.C. Cosme (No. 30).
2015 IN REVIEW: The TinCaps went 77-61, winning the MWL Eastern Division's second half title and clinching a 7th straight playoff berth. Fort Wayne was eliminated by the eventual league champs, the West Michigan Whitecaps, in the Eastern Division Semifinals.
BANNER YEAR: Not only did the TinCaps win on the field in 2015, the organization succeeded off the field, too. For the 4th time in 5 years, Parkview Field was ranked the No. 1 Minor League Baseball Ballpark Experience (Stadium Journey ). Team President Mike Nutter was named MWL Executive of the Year. Head Groundskeeper Keith Winter was named the Single-A Sports Turf Manager of the Year. The TinCaps received MiLB's Community Service Award. Even "SNL Night" was tabbed as a Top 5 MiLB Theme Night. Meanwhile, the team averaged a record 5,971 fans per game and topped 400K total.
NEW BUT FAMILIAR: With last year's TinCaps skipper Francisco Morales now leading the Padres' Advanced-A affiliate, the Lake Elsinore Storm, Anthony Contreras is the 18th manager in Fort Wayne franchise history. Contreras, 32, played in 36 games for the Fort Wayne Wizards in 2008. Playing second base, third, and shortstop, he hit .304 with 7 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 home run.
NEW BUT FAMILIAR (PART 2): In 2015, Contreras managed SD's Short Season-A club, the Tri-City Dust Devils, to a 42-34 record, a division title, and a trip to the Northwest League Finals. In 2014, Contreras managed the Peoria Padres of the Arizona League. Over those 2 seasons, he managed 16 players on Opening Day roster.
