SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps are heading home undefeated as they took advantage of six errors as part of a 6-3 win while visiting the South Bend Cubs Friday night at Four Winds Field.

A three-run Whitecaps third inning broke open the scoring, when Brett Pirtle laced a two-run single to leftfield and scored from first on a throwing error by South Bend pitcher Justin Steele. In the bottom of the inning, a wild pitch by 'Caps starter Fernando Perez gave the Cubs their first run before David Gonzalez chipped in with an RBI-double in the fourth.

West Michigan scored two more in the sixth on a Cubs double-error on an attempted caught stealing of centerfielder Derek Hill. With third baseman Steven Fuentes on third base and the speedy outfielder at first, Hill took off for second. The throw from South Bend catcher Ian Rice traveled into centerfield allowing Hill to take third, then score on a bobble by South Bend centerfielder Donnie Dewees. In the bottom of the inning, a two-run triple from shortstop Bryant Flete gave the Cubs a pair of runs to make the score 6-3. Play was stopped in the seventh due to a heavy snowfall, and was eventually called due to unsafe playing conditions after a 42-minute delay.

Perez started on the mound for West Michigan, giving up an unearned run in four innings without allowing a hit. Perez walked three batters and hit three more in receiving a no-decision. Reliever Jordan Smith (1-0) picked up his first Whitecaps victory after tossing 2.2 innings after Perez left the contest. Steele (0-1) took his first loss for the Cubs as the lefty lasted just 3.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits while committing three errors in the ballgame. The Whitecaps return home with a record of 2-0, while the Cubs fall to 0-2 on the season. Pirtle led the way for West Michigan for the second night in a row, going 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, two RBI and a run scored. Pirtle has five RBI in the first two Whitecaps game of the 2016 season. The South Bend offense was led by Flete's 2-for-3 performance with two runs batted in.
