Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, WI- A night of unpredictable weather ended up working in the Snappers' favor on Friday, as Beloit defeated the Timber Rattlers 9-5 in a snow-shortened, five-inning win. The skies were clear at game time, but snow started coming down shortly after first pitch, and by the fifth inning, brutal Wisconsin weather was in full force as a flurry enveloped Pohlman Field. After the Timber Rattlers got the last out in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Snappers took the field, but everyone was promptly sent into the clubhouse after the umpires called for a 30-minute delay to see if the weather would improve.

If anything, the weather got worse during the delay and the game was called, letting players on both sides off the hook of having to play any further in 16-degree, 40 mile-per-hour wind chill. That was probably for the best as it was an ugly game on both sides: the two teams combined for eight errors, though some of those plays likely would have been made under normal circumstances.

Wisconsin got on the board first in the second inning on Carlos Belonis's RBI single. The next batter, Troy Stokes Jr., then rifled a ground ball off the foot of starter Boomer Biegalski, who couldn't find the ball for a moment. He recovered and threw to catcher Nick Collins in time to get David Denson, who was trying to score from third. However, Collins dropped the ball, allowing the Timber Rattlers to extend their lead to 2-0.

The Snappers countered in the bottom of the inning on Steven Pallares's RBI single, but Wisconsin quickly got the run back on Isan Diaz's towering moonshot that stayed just inside the right field foul pole. The Timber Rattlers tacked on another run in the fourth inning on Stokes's RBI single.

However, in the bottom of the fourth inning, the game completely unraveled for Wisconsin starter Marcos Diplan, mainly because of the incompetence of the defense behind him. Pallares started the Beloit rally with his second RBI single of the night. Jesus Lopez then laid down a bunt, which first baseman Sthervin Matos picked up and threw down the third base line while trying to make an out at third. This opened the door to a seven-run inning for the Snappers, which included three more errors by Wisconsin's defense as well as an RBI double from Ryan Howell and Brett Siddall's RBI single.

Diplan received a worse fate than he deserved, as he was pulled after 3+ innings during the defensive meltdown. He allowed five runs-- four earned-- on four hits while walking three and striking out one.

His mound opponent, Biegalski, also got knocked around a bit, as he gave up four runs, three of them earned, over four innings of work. He walked three and struck out two. Reliever Xavier Altamirano was credited the win following his inning of work.

It was a wild night in Beloit, as on top of the 30-minute snow delay before the game was called, there was a 16-minute delay after a bank of lights went out behind home plate in the fourth inning.

The Snappers will head up to Appleton tomorrow to begin the second part of the four-game series with the Timber Rattlers. Beloit will send James Naile, who went 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA across two levels in the minors last year, to the mound. He'll face Jon Perrin, who posted a 4.31 ERA in 10 games for the Timber Rattlers in 2015.
