Bowling Green, Ky. - The Bowling Green Hot Rods scored five runs in the second inning and held off a Dayton comeback bid on the way to a 9-4 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Friday night. The Hot Rods won both games in Kentucky to open the 2016 Midwest League season.

Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, getting a bases-loaded walk to start the scoring. They collected three hits, two walks, and five runs in the second to build their lead to 6-0. They added another run in the fourth to lead 7-0.

The Dragons started back in the sixth, scoring three runs to pull to within four at 7-3. Narciso Crook and Mitch Piatnik each delivered run-scoring singles in the inning and Hector Vargas drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Dragons added another run in the top of the seventh when Shed Long singled and scored from first on James Vasquez's double off the right field fence to make it 7-4. The Dragons actually got the tying run to the plate later in the inning, but Crook grounded out to second with two men on base to end any further scoring.

Bowling Green answered with one run in the bottom of the seventh to slow down the Dragons comeback bid and build their lead to 8-4. The tacked on one more in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Dayton finished with nine hits. Vasquez led the way with two hits including a double and an RBI. Long also had two hits.

Dayton starting pitcher Jacob Constante (0-1) struggled to throw strikes and left the game after seeing the first four batters reach safely in the second inning. He was credited with one inning of work, allowing five runs on five walks and two hits with two strikeouts.

The Dragons (0-2) will host Bowling Green in their annual Opening Day event at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, April 9. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m. The series will continue at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
