Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps brought the tying run to the plate in their comeback bid Thursday night at Parkview Field, but fell short in an 8-4 loss to the Great Lakes Loons. Daniel Robertson stroked a double among two hits and scored twice. For the second straight night, the Loons jumped ahead early. Joe Becker cracked a three-run homer to left to put Great Lakes ahead, 3-0. They tacked on another run in the 5th on a two-out single by Anthony Hatch.
The TinCaps got to work in the 5th when Robertson led off with a single and later scored on Jaff Decker's RBI single to right.
Fort Wayne stayed on the comeback trail in the 6th with a two-out rally. Adam Zornes and Robertson hit back-to-back doubles to make it 4-2, then Blake Tekotte stroked a single to right to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Loons blew it open in the top of the 7th . Kyle Russell lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center to extend the margin to 5-3; when all the runners tried to move up, the TinCaps fired to second and nearly retired the runner. Manager Doug Dascenzo argued the call and was ejected. Alfredo Silverio followed with a two-out, two-run double into the left-field corner and Jerry Sands hit another two-bagger to put the Loons ahead, 8-3.
The TinCaps mounted another rally in the 9th . Decker and Allan Dykstra worked back-to-back walks to start the inning, then Cole Figueroa flared a single to left to load the bases. Two batters later, Yefri Carvajal singled to right to make it 8-4 and bring the tying run to the plate. Great Lakes closer Cole St. Clair induced a pair of flyouts to end the game.
Loons RHP JonMichael Redding (16-3) notched the win and now is alone atop the Midwest League in wins. Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt was the losing pitcher, dipping to 7-4.
The TinCaps fell to 90-46 for the season, 45-21 in the second half. Great Lakes improved to 79-57 overall, 39-27 for the half.
Fort Wayne and the Loons (Class-A Los Angeles Dodgers) finish the series Friday at Parkview Field. TinCaps RHP Simon Castro (10-6) is the starter against Loons RHP Josh Walter (10-4) in a 7:05pm start.
