Whitecaps Hold Off Lugnuts

Lansing, MI - A big 4-run third inning carried the West Michigan Whitecaps past the Lansing Lugnuts Thursday night at Oldsmobile Park, 5-3. The Whitecaps used five pitchers and didn't secure the win until Tyler Stohr got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth.

The Lugnuts broke out on top 2-0 in the first off Whitecaps starter Adam Wilk on RBI singles by Johermyn Chavez and Mark Sobolewski. The Whitecaps then sent 9 men to the plate in the third and scored four times to take a 4-2 lead off Lansing starter Chris Holguin. Gustavo Nunez lead off with a triple past centerfielder Kenny Wilson. He scored on a base hit by Brent Wyatt. The big blow in the inning was a 2-run double by Jordan Lennerton who extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He later scored on a base hit by Avasail Garcia.

The Lugnuts cut the 4-2 lead to 4-3 on an RBI single by Jon Talley in the 7th. The Whitecaps countered with a run in the 8th on an RBI triple by Garcia. Garcia was 2-3 with 2 RBI and was on base 4 times in the game. Nunez and Wyatt each had 2 hits for the Whitecaps as well.

The Lugnuts loaded the bases with two out in the 9th, but Tyler Stohr came in to the game and got Ryan Goins to ground out to pick up his 19th save. Eric Crichton (7-0, 4.02) got the win for the Whitecaps. Holguin (1-5, 6.34) took the loss for Lansing.

The final game of the series will be played tomorrow night in Lansing. Game time at Oldsmobile Park is 7:05.
