Unusual ending gives Kernels 4-3 win at Wisconsin
September 3, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
September 2, 2009 - An unusual sacrifice fly-double play to end the game gave the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 4-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The win snapped the Kernels three game losing skid as they improve to 34-29 in the MWL second half and 74-59 overall.
With the bases loaded and one out, Wisconsin shortstop Joshua Prince hit a fly ball to right field that appeared to be going for extra bases. Kernels right field Angel Castillo ran down the ball and made the catch and as Derrick Alfonso tagged and scored from third, Erik Miller did not and Castillo relayed the ball to Darwin Perez to double off Miller at second base and end the game.
Christian Scholl made a spot start for the Kernels, and allowed an unearned run over three scoreless innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. New Kernel Mike Rocco (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Scholl and Vladimir Veras pitched three innings of relief for his 11th save. Wisconsin starter Evan Frederickson (3-8) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out five over 4 IP.
Darwin Perez gave the Kernels a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a two run homer to left field. Roberto Lopez added to that lead in the fifth with a two run single to score Tyson Auer and Alexi Amarista. Angels' 2009 first round pick Mike Trout went 1-2 with a walk and sacrifice bunt and Jean Almanzar made his Kernels debut at third, going 0-4.
