Cougars Notes
Last Chance! This weekend's Labor Day weekend homestand puts the finishing touches on the 2009 regular season. This weekend, the Cougars serve up the final two fireworks shows of the season (Saturday and Sunday), three straight pre-game autograph sessions (Saturday-Monday) and a special Fan Appreciation Day planned for Monday. Numerous lucky seat prizes will be randomly awarded to fans during the regular season finale. Tickets are expected to go quickly this weekend, and fans are encouraged to make their plans today for best available seating.
Kilby Gets Major League Call: Another former Cougar has received a promotion to the big leagues. Pitcher Brad Kilby, who played at Elfstrom Stadium in 2006, was called up to the Oakland A's Tuesday and pitched two scoreless innings in yesterday's A's win against Kansas City. Kilby becomes the 108th former Cougar to play at baseball's highest level. Kilby is the first left-handed pitcher to make his debut for the Cougars' parent club since '04 alum Dallas Braden on April 24, 2007, and the fourth member of the '06 Western Division championship team to reach the bigs, joining Jeff Baisley, Jeff Gray and Vin Mazzaro.
Former Cougars Among League Leaders In Numerous Categories: Luis Castillo (10th - NL Batting, .308 avg.), Huston Street (T-2nd - NL Saves, 33), Andre Ethier (5th - NL Doubles, 33), Miguel Cabrera (4th - AL Batting, .336 avg.), Josh Beckett (T-2nd - AL Wins, 14)
Roster Moves: A pair of fresh faces from the '09 draft class recently put on Cougars uniforms for the first t time. Conner Crumbliss joined the team on August 22 from Short-A Vancouver. Nicknamed "The Pocketknife" by Vancouver broadcaster Rob Fai, the 5-foot-8 infielder has brought a spark to the Cougars in the lead-off spot. Just three days later, the Cougars welcomed pitcher Paul Smyth into the mix from Vancouver. Similar to Crumbliss, Smyth is a '09 draftee and between his time north of the border and in Geneva, he has not allowed a run of any kind in more than 30 innings.
