Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - Tyler Stohr coaxed a Ryan Goins groundout to second with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, saving the West Michigan Whitecaps' (38-28; 81-55) 5-3 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts (26-40; 52-83) before a Thursday night crowd of 7,912 at Oldsmobile Park.

Victor Larez had recorded the first two outs in the ninth before plunking Jon Talley and serving up a Luis Fernandez double, putting the potential game-tying runs in scoring position. Kenny Wilson drew a walk to load the bases, causing the Whitecaps to bring in Stohr. The closer summarily retired Goins, picking up his 19th save of the season.

Erik Crichton (7-0) earned the victory for West Michigan, hurling 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Adam Wilk.

He was assisted by a four-run Whitecaps third inning against Lugnuts starter Chris Holguin (1-5), lifting West Michigan from an early 2-0 deficit.

The Lugnuts crept within a run on Fernandez's RBI grounder in the seventh, only to see centerfielder Kenny Wilson misplay Avisail Garcia's eighth inning liner into an RBI triple, restoring the two-run lead.

Balbino Fuenmayor doubled twice and scored a run for the Lugnuts, who also received RBI singles from Johermyn Chavez and Mark Sobolewski in defeat.

The Lugnuts play their final home game of the 2009 season on Friday at 7:05 p.m., sending right-hander Chad Beck (6-8, 6.08) to the mound against Whitecaps northpaw Luke Putkonen (7-8, 3.26). It's Fan Appreciation Night at Oldsmobile Park, featuring an Auto-Owners Insurance Bobblehead Giveaway, LAFCU Fireworks, and a post-game on-field autograph session with the Lugnuts players and coaches presented by the Lansing Board of Water & Light.
