Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN -- For the first time in nearly two years, the TinCaps were swept in a doubleheader on Thursday night at Parkview Field. The South Bend Silver Hawks topped Fort Wayne 5-0 in game one and 1-0 in game two.
In the opener, the Silver Hawks touched Justin Hancock for three runs in the second inning and added two more in the fifth. The runs ended Hancock's 15 and 2/3 scoreless innings streak. The right-hander from Defiance, Ohio, exited after 4 and 2/3 frames, having allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk.
Offensively, Fort Wayne couldn't figure out South Bend starter Brad Allen, who threw a seven-inning complete game. The righty walked four and gave up four hits, but the TinCaps went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Fort Wayne left the bases loaded twice.
The Silver Hawks then scored the only run of game two in the top of the fourth inning against Zach Eflin. Rudy Flores scored Alex Glenn on the second triple of his career. Despite taking the loss, Eflin struck out a personal-best eight in five innings. Fellow right-hander Michael Kelly followed Eflin's strong performance with two innings of relief that included five strikeouts.
Rob Coe earned the win in game two for South Bend. The 25-year old held Fort Wayne to two hits across six innings, while he fanned six. RJ Hively pitched a hit-less ninth to register his second save in as many days and Midwest League-leading 11th of the year.
The TinCaps hadn't been swept in a doubleheader since June 14, 2011 against Dayton. With the two losses, Fort Wayne (25-20) trails South Bend (28-16) by 3 and 1/2 games for the Midwest League's Eastern Division wild card berth.
The TinCaps and Silver Hawks conclude their four-game series at Parkview Field on Friday night at 7:05. Ruben Mejia (2-4, 2.57) is set to start for Fort Wayne against South Bend's Jesse Darrah (3-3, 4.28). The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
