Tigers Drop BC Division Finale to Cougars
October 23, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Prince George, BC - A raucous crowd and fast paced hockey by the Medicine Hat Tigers & Prince George Cougars would result in late game heroics as the Tigers would fall 7-5 to Cougars Sunday night.
The first period would see both clubs take their turn with great opportunities to open the scoring but starters Ty Young and Tigers goaltender Evan May (Nanaimo, BC) would stand tall before the visitors from Medicine Hat would cash in on a late power play as Cayden Lindstrom (Chetwynd, BC) would bang home his ninth of the season from Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) & Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, YT) at 17:12. But the Cougars would have a late 4 on 3 power play and Terik Parascak would tie things up at 1-1 with 6.6 seconds left in the first to keep things deadlocked.
In the second period the Tigers would cash in on another power play as Hunter St. Martin (Edmonton, AB) would re-direct his third of the season at 3:38 from McKenna & Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) to restore the Tiger lead at 2-1. But the Cougars would charge through for three straight goals as Ondrej Becher would tie it at 2-2 at 5:26, followed by a 3-2 mark from Riley Heidt just 33 seconds later on a missed hit from Bogdans Hodass (Jelgava, LAT) to give the Cougars the lead. They would then add to their lead on another man advantage as Becher would re-direct his 2nd of the night to increase the Prince George lead to 4-2.
But the Tigers would make things interesting as Rhett Parsons (Cremona, AB) would wrist one past Ty Young for his 1st of the season to make things interesting heading to the third making it just a 4-3 lead for Prince George heading to the third.
The Tigers would build off that Rhett Parsons goal as Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) would tie the game at 4-4 from Josh Van Mulligen and then just 1:10 later at 3:13 the Tigers would take the lead thanks to Cayden Lindstrom's 2nd of the night to give the Tigers the lead again from Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) & Dru Krebs (Okotoks, AB).
But on a Tigers penalty the Cougars would counter as Hudson Thornton would tie the game at 14:40 to make it 5-5. Then some heartbreak for the Tigers as a screen shot with 1:17 left in regulation by Bauer Dumanski would beat Evan May and give the the Cougars the lead they'd need and despite an extra attacker situation to follow the Tigers could not rally again as Tarik Parascak would finish things off with an empty goal to make it a 7-5 final.
The Tigers conclude their BC Division road-trip with a 3-2 record with wins in Kelowna, Vancouver & Kamloops. They'll return home to action against the Edmonton Oil Kings Friday, October 27 at Co-op Place.
