The Prince George Cougars are celebrating an impressive display of talent and dedication from their 2023 prospect pool at the recently concluded WHL Cup in Red Deer, Alberta. This season has been a testament to the Cougars' commitment to developing promising young players, and their prospects certainly did not disappoint on this grand stage.
In the gold medal game, the spotlight shone on three outstanding Cougar prospects, each representing their respective teams. First-round pick Carson Carels showcased his prowess with Team Manitoba, while second-rounder Dermot Johnston and third-rounder Patrick Sopiarz proudly donned the Team Alberta jersey.
Carson Carels, hailing from Cypress River, Manitoba, delivered an unforgettable performance in the gold medal game, leading Team Manitoba to a thrilling shootout victory. Carels, who became a standout player, left an indelible mark on the tournament. He scored twice in the gold medal game, earned the prestigious title of Tournament MVP, and secured a well-deserved spot on the tournament's all-star team. Throughout the WHL Cup, Carels showcased his scoring abilities, tallying three goals and two assists in five games.
Patrick Sopiarz, a native of Edmonton, Alberta, also left his mark with a remarkable showing throughout the tournament. In four games, Sopiarz displayed his scoring prowess by finding the back of the net four times and adding an assist. His impact in the gold medal game was undeniable, as he netted two crucial goals and earned the distinction of Team Alberta's player of the game.
Dermot Johnston played a pivotal role on the defensive end for Team Alberta, contributing to their success throughout the tournament. Johnston's presence and skill were evident as he tallied one assist in five games.
