Tides Walk off on Wynns' Single in 10th
May 3, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Austin Wynns capped Norfolk's comeback with a walk-off single in the 10th inning as the Tides rallied for a 6-5 win over the Louisville Bats Thursday night at Harbor Park.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the tenth, Wynns opened the inning with a single to left field on a 2-2 pitch from Ben Rowen (0-1), easily plating Michael Saunders - who began the inning on second base - to complete a furious Tides rally.
Norfolk had trailed the contest 5-0 in the fourth inning, as the Bats batted around in the fourth frame courtesy of four hits and a walk off of David Hess. The big blow of the frame was a grand slam off the bat of Tony Cruz, his first home run of the season.
The Tides began to chip away at the lead in the fifth, as Ruben Tejada plated two runs with a double off the left field wall. Wynns hit a solo homer in the sixth to pull the Tides within 5-3, and DJ Stewart connected on an RBI single in the eighth to bring Norfolk within a run. The Tides then had nobody on with two out in the ninth, but Alex Presley doubled and Tejada followed with a single to right that scored Presley and sent the game to extras.
Jhan Marinez (1-3) earned the win, as he struck out two and walked a batter while working a scoreless inning. Norfolk's bullpen combined to allow just two hits while striking out seven over five shutout innings of relief.
Hess, who entered play with a 1.02 ERA, cruised through three innings before Louisville batted around against him in the fourth. Hess would work five innings, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out three.
The five-run deficit overcome was Norfolk's biggest comeback win of the season and helped the Tides (13-11) remain within a half-game of the Durham Bulls (14-11) in the IL South Division.
The Tides and Bats will continue their series on Friday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Left-hander Chris Lee is set to make his season debut for Norfolk and will be opposed by left-hander Justin Nicolino (1-2, 3.60). Following Friday's game, there will be a postgame fireworks show, presented by BAE Systems.
Notes: Alex Presley had two hits and a run as he extended his hitting streak to nine games...Joey Rickard singled to extend his on-base streak to 18 games...Tanner Scott worked a scoreless ninth inning, giving him 9.0 shutout innings of work with the Tides this season...Louisville reliever Kyle Crockett, a native of Newport News, worked 1.2 scoreless innings of relief...Norfolk's catchers have combined to hit .341 (32-94) with five home runs and 24 RBI this season.
