Toledo Mud Hens News Release
DURHAM, N.C. - Mikie Mahtook homered for the second consecutive game, but the Toledo Mud Hens' comeback bid came up short in a 3-2 decision to the Durham Bulls on Thursday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With nine hits in the series opener, the Mud Hens (16-9) have recorded eight or more hits in each of their last eight contests. Mahtook put in a strong shift against his former club, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a single, an RBI, and two runs scored. Chad Huffman finished 3-for-4 with a pair of two-base hits, while Jason Krizan went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
Drew VerHagen tossed three hitless innings in his season debut with Toledo, surrendering a walk while striking out four. Josh Turley also notched four strikeouts in his five innings of relief, but picked up the loss after allowing three earned runs on eight hits and four walks.
The game remained scoreless after three innings, though the Mud Hens threatened to get on the board in the top of the fourth. Christin Stewart whacked a base hit into right before Huffman doubled to left to put runners on second and third with one down. Edwin Espinal then ripped a grounder up the middle that would have driven in at least one run, but the ball ricocheted off the foot of Durham (14-11) pitcher Forrest Snow, who was able to recover and make the throw to first to record the out.
Durham opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the frame. With a runner on second and two outs, Jason Coats lined a double into center to drive in Willy Adames and give the Bulls a 1-0 edge. The hosts extended their lead, as Christian Arroyo singled to center to bring home Coats, while Curt Casali lined a base hit into center to plate Arroyo and make it a 3-0 ballgame.
The Mud Hens continued to hit the ball hard, and finally made a breakthrough in the top of the fifth. Mahtook homered for the second time in as many games, belting a two-out solo shot to left to trim the Bulls' lead to 3-1. Krizan added a double into right, but the rally came to an end after he was thrown out at the plate trying to score on Jim Adduci's single to right.
Toledo continued to apply pressure on Durham, tallying another run in the seventh. Mahtook grounded an infield single to second, and scored when Krizan ripped a double into left to cut the deficit in half. Representing the Mud Hens' final out in the ninth, Dawel Lugo entered the game as a pinch-hitter, but he lined out to second as the comeback bid fell short.
The Mud Hens look to get back in the win column tomorrow night in game two of their series aganst Durham. First pitch from Durham Bulls Athletic Park is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
