Columbus Clippers News Release

Shane Bieber dazzled in his Clippers debut, tossing six two-hit innings on the way to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Charlotte Knights.

Bieber found himself behind early, but settled in with the help of his defense to deliver a stellar first showing.

Charlotte hopped on the scoreboard in the second inning on a Matt Skole opposite field homerun that inched just over the wall in left for a 1-0 lead.

After that, Bieber got comfortable, setting down 11 consecutive Knights until his team could score.

That came in the fifth inning when Nellie Rodriguez pounded a double to right-center, scoring Mike Papi who was on first after a one-out walk. Adam Rosales then laced a single over the head of Charlotte shortstop Jose Rondon, who was drawn in on the grass, to score Rodriguez for the 2-1 lead.

Bieber followed with a scoreless sixth to end his evening.

He allowed just one run on two hits over his six frames, while walking two and striking out five.

Jack Leathersich relieved Bieber and kept the Knights' bats at bay in the seventh.

Luke Eubank came on for Columbus in the eighth and allowed a leadoff double to Casey Gillaspie. Jacob May sacked him over to third and he was scored by Todd Cunningham on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.

After a scoreless top of the ninth, Brandon Barnes drilled a 1-out double off the left field wall to set up a scoring chance for the Clippers. The next batter, Yu Chang blasted a moon shot to left-center for the walk-off 4-2 win.

The two teams will go at it again tomorrow at 7:15 at Huntington Park.
