Buffalo, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs fell to the Buffalo Bisons, 3-0, Thursday night under foggy conditions at Coca-Cola Field. Edwin Jackson allowed just two runs and tied a Chiefs' season high with nine strikeouts in six innings, but the Bisons' quieted the Chiefs bats in the first game of the four-game series.
Buffalo (8-10) took an early lead three batters into the bottom of the first. Dalton Pompey doubled to start the inning. Jackson then struck out Tim Lopes, but Lopes reached first on a wild pitch to put runners on the corners. Danny Jansen followed with an RBI single to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead.
Darnell Sweeney added to the scoring in the fourth, homering over the wall in left. His third home run of the season stretched the lead to two.
The Bisons added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Lopes singled off Christopher Smith through the right side. Lopes then stole second, and moved to third on a throwing error on Chiefs' catcher Spencer Kieboom. Lopes scored on a sacrifice fly by Jansen for an unearned run to extend the lead to three.
Syracuse (14-10) could not find the scoreboard for the fourth time this season. It marks just the second time all year the Chiefs have lost consecutive games.
The series continues in downtown Buffalo Friday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Cesar Vargas is scheduled to start for the Chiefs opposite RHP Deck McGuire for the Bisons.
