Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls (14-11) grabbed a three-run lead early and held on behind a solid start from Forrest Snow, sending the Bulls to a series opening 3-2 win over the Toledo Mud Hens at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Thursday night.
The Bulls were held without a hit through three innings by Toledo Mud Hens (16-9) starter Drew VerHagen, but broke out in the fourth inning with three runs on five hits against Mud Hens reliever Josh Turley (L, 1-1).
Jake Bauers led off the fourth with an infield single, and Willy Adames followed with a walk to put a pair on base. On a double-steal, Bauers was caught at third and Adames advanced to second. Jason Coats then laced a two-out, run-scoring double to centerfield, giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Christian Arroyo plated the second run in the fourth and Curt Casali drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single later in the frame, extending the Bulls lead to 3-0.
Snow (W, 2-1) held the Mud Hens scoreless until the fifth when he allowed a two-out solo home run to former Bull Mikie Mahtook, cutting the Bulls lead to 3-1. Justin Williams threw out Jason Krizan at home attempting to score on a single to right field by Jim Adduci later in the frame ending the Mud Hens' threat in and preserving the Bulls lead. Snow tossed 6.0 innings allowing one run on seven hits, with one walk and five strikeouts, earning his second victory of the season. Adam Kolarek allowed one run on two hits over 1.1 innings, keeping the Bulls in front and giving the ball to Diego Castillo (S, 2) with a one run lead, 3-2.
Castillo worked a perfect 1.2 innings, fanning one batter and earning his second save of the season.
The series continues on Friday night with Ryan Weber (0-0, 0.90) taking the mound for Durham, opposing Toledo lefty Blaine Hardy (3-0, 0.74) at 7:05 p.m. on Star Wars Night at the DBAP.
