Norfolk Tides News Release

August 2, 2007 - Tike Redman made a diving catch to rob Louisville of a game-tying run in the 7th inning, helping Norfolk knock off the Bats 1-0 in game two of a doubleheader Thursday night. Louisville won the opener in extra innings, 6-4.

With two outs in the 7th inning of game two, Jorge Cantu singled off of Jim Hoey, bringing up Jesse Gutierrez, who lined a sharp fly ball deep into left-center field. Redman tracked it down and made a sensational diving catch, giving the Tides win and the split of the twinbill.

Redman had also kept the Bats from scoring in the 4th inning, when he threw a perfect strike to home plate to retire Joey Votto, who was attempting to score on a fly ball off the bat of Jay Bruce.

Redman also plated Norfolk's lone run of the contest, when he led off the first inning with a double and scored on a one-out single by J.R. House.

Tim Kester (8-8) kept the Bats off the board for five innings to pick up the win, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out one. Hoey pitched the final two innings to earn his second Triple-A save.

In game one, the Bats plated two runs in the third inning to take an early lead, then extended their lead to 4-0 on an RBI double by Cantu in the 5th inning and a solo home run by Bruce in the 6th.

Norfolk mounted a rally in the bottom of the 6th, collecting four hits in the frame to pull within one run. Adam Stern and Bo Hart began the inning with singles, and Mike Cervenak followed by lining a one-out double down the left field line to plate Stern and get the Tides on the board. Jason Dubois then plated Hart with a groundout, and Terry Tiffee pulled the Tides within one run with an RBI single to left.

The Tides tied the contest in the bottom of the 7th, courtesy of some exceptional bunting. Redman started the rally with a one-out, pinch-hit bunt single, and he advanced to third on a single to right by Stern. Hart then dropped down a perfect safety squeeze bunt for an RBI single, tying the score and sending the game to extra innings.

Louisville answered back against Tides' reliever Francis Beltran (2-7) in the 8th, as Aaron Herr led off the frame with a double and scored on a one-out single by Jesse Gutierrez. Gutierrez proceeded to steal second base, and came around to score on a single by Ryan Jorgensen.

Norfolk put the tying run on base in the bottom of the 8th, but Louisville reliever Gary Majewski escaped the threat to earn his fourth save of the season.

Norfolk and Louisville will conclude their four-game, three-day set on Friday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 7:15. Jon Leicester (1-2, 3.09) is slated to take the mound for the Tides against Bats' right-hander Tom Shearn (5-9, 4.37).
