Durham Bulls News Release

Durham, NC - Wes Bankston led the Bulls' offensive attack, going 4-5 with three RBI, while Jon Weber's seventh inning home run turned out to be the difference maker as the Bulls defeated the Columbus Clippers, 9-8 on Thursday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham improves to 60-52 on the season.

The Bulls overcame a 6-4 deficit with a four-run fifth inning. Bankston drove in two runs with a double and Joel Guzman hit a mammoth two-run home run over The Blue Monster. Weber's solo home run gave the Bulls a 9-6 cushion, which was needed as Larry Broadway hit a solo home run and Manny Alexander hit an RBI-triple to bring Columbus within one in the eighth inning. RHP Shawn Camp ended the threat though with a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save as a Bull.

The Bulls jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning with RBI-doubles from Justin Ruggiano and Bankston, a sacrifice fly from Evan Longoria in his first Triple-A plate appearance, and an RBI-triple from Joel Guzman, but the Clippers responded in the top of the second inning. Brandon Watson and Bernie Castro started the scoring with a pair of RBI-singles before Abraham Nunez belted a three-run home run to give Columbus a 5-4 lead. Melvin Dorta extended the lead to 6-4 with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

RHP Mitch Talbot (9-8) worked five innings, surrendering six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts, while Columbus starter Josh Hall (1-1) lasted just 4 1/3 innings, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and two walks with just one strikeout.

The Bulls and Clippers will meet again on Friday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
