Wichita Thunder News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS- The Wichita Thunder defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 5-4 in a shootout at the DeSoto Civic Center on Saturday night. Scott Campbell stopped 39 of 43 through regulation and overtime and then went a perfect five for five in the shootout to help the Thunder to their third consecutive win.

Wichita grabbed an early lead on Steve Makway's goal at 3:55 in the first. Shane Foster passed from the hashmarks to the right corner where Paul Kelly sent the puck back to Makway in the high slot. The defenseman scored on a low shot past the right of RiverKings' goaltender Tim Boron. Bobby Chaumont knocked in Kevin Truelson's backdoor pass to the left of Scott Campbell at 6:11 in the first to tie the game.

The second period opened much the way the first did, with a former RiverKings scoring early. This time Kevin Cooper picked up a shorthanded breakaway and beat Boron with a backhander on a deke to the left side of the crease. The Thunder went up 3-1 at 11:02 in the second on a goal from Jason Reese. After sustained pressure in the offensive zone, Reese popped a loose puck into the net during a scramble in the low slot. The RiverKings moved within one near the end of the period on a snapshot from Darrell Stoddard at 16:07.

The back-and-forth battle continued into the third when Mississippi tied it on Stephen Margeson's goal at 6:58. The Thunder took the lead for a third time shortly after on a goal from Jim Jorgensen at 8:25. Brent Ottmann carried the puck into the zone and left a drop pass at the blue line that Jorgensen powered past the right of Boron. The RiverKings tied it yet again with just 3:40 left in regulation on a goal from Matt Pierce.

The Thunder survived an early Kings' power play to start overtime and the two teams remained tied at four after five minutes of extra hockey. Paul Kelly beat Boron on the very first shot, which proved to be the only goal scored by either side. The shootout win is the first in the career of Campbell, who turned aside Bobby Chaumont, Derek Landmesser, Louis Dumont, Matt Pierce, and Matt Summers. Wichtia was 0 for 2 on the power play while 3 for on the penalty kill.

The Thunder returns home on Wednesday to take on the Colorado Eagles at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
