Thunder Stop RiverKings in Shootout

SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Wichita Thunder edged the Mississippi RiverKings 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday, February 6 at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Paul Kelly scored the only goal of the five-round shootout to win the game; the Thunder's seventh of the season and second against Mississippi this season.

The RiverKings' offense was led by Bobby Chaumont and Stephen Margeson, who each scored a goal and added an assist in the contest.

Mississippi never led in the game, but tied it three times, including the final time with 3:40 remaining in the final period when Matt Pierce netted his seventh goal of the season from Chaumont and Glenn Detulleo. The goal evened the game at 4-4 and took it into overtime and the resulting shootout.

The RiverKings also got a goal from Darrell Stoddard, who has now scored eight points in his last four games.

Wichita goals were scored by former RiverKings Steve Makway and Kevin Cooper, along with Jason Reese and Jim Jorgenson, who gave the Thunder a 4-3 lead with 11:35 remaining in the third period.

For the night, Mississippi out shot the Thunder by a 43-28 margin, including 13 in each of the last two periods, while holding Wichita to seven shots each in the second and third periods.

Neither team scored on the power play, with the RiverKings going 0-for-3 and Wichita ending 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

Tim Boron (1-5-1) took the shootout loss in net for the RiverKings with a 24-save effort. Scott Campbell (6-15-1) stopped all five shots in the shootout and finished with 39 saves in getting the win for Wichita.

Despite losing, the bonus point moved the RiverKings within one point of third place in the Central Hockey League Northern Conference standings with a 22-18-5 record. Wichita improves to 7-32-3.

After the game, an auction of the special night jerseys worn by the RiverKings for Southland Park Gaming and Racing and Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Option was held. $7500 was raised in the jersey auction with the net proceeds being split between Mid-South Greyhound Adoption Option and the Jr. StreetKings youth roller hockey program in Hernando.

Mississippi, now one point behind Bossier-Shreveport in the Northern Conference standings, will host the Mudbugs on Tuesday night, February 9, at 7:05 PM at the DeSoto Civic Center. Living Waters Honduras Mission will be featured.
