Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ- Lance Pendleton struck out a season-high nine batters, as the Thunder defeated Binghamton 6-2 on Friday night at Waterfront Park. Trenton (36-23) used ten walks and two hit batters to pick up their fifth straight win and remain a half game in first place.
The Thunder took advantage of LHP Eric Niesen (1-3) in the first inning who walked the first two batters he faced on eight pitches. Back-to-back base hits from Brandon Laird and Jorge Vazquez drove in a run each and Trenton had an early 2-0 lead. After Niesen loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter in the second inning, he was taken out for RHP Eddie Kunz. The righty Kunz walked Austin Krum with the bases loaded to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead.
Binghamton scored their first run in the fourth inning as Nick Evans led the inning off with a double and advanced to third base on a wild pitch from RHP Lance Pendleton. A Luis Hernandez sacrifice fly brought in Evans to cut Trenton's lead to 3-1. In the sixth inning, Jonathan Malo led off with another double and came around to score on an infield single by Hernandez, and the Thunder led 3-2 at the end of six innings.
Pendleton left after seven innings of work and gave up two runs on five hits and a season-high nine strikeouts.
Marcos Vechionacci led off the eighth inning for the Thunder with a double and advanced to second after Luis Nunez reached base on a fielding error. Kevin Mahoney was intentionally walked and with the bases loaded and with the Binghamton infield playing in, Justin Christian drove in two runs on a single to left field to increase Trenton's lead to 5-2. A hard-hit single by Krum brought in Mahoney to make it 6-2 after eight innings.
RHP Kevin Whelan pitched the final two innings for Trenton allowing just one hit while striking out three to earn the save.
The Thunder and B-Mets play the middle game of their weekend series on Saturday night at 7:05 PM. RHP D.J. Mitchell makes the start for Trenton, while Binghamton will counter with RHP Chris Schwinden.
