Walks Plague B-Mets in 6-2 Loss at Trenton

Eric Niesen walked four in a brief, 1 1/3 innings start and Binghamton walked 10 Trenton hitters as a team, leading to a 6-2 defeat at Waterfront Park Friday night. Luis Hernandez provided the only run-scoring for the B-Mets with a sac fly and an RBI single off Thunder starter Lance Pendleton who struck out a season-best nine over seven innings for the win.

Niesen came out of the gates cold, walking the first two men he faced in the first inning. After getting the next hitter, Niesen gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Brandon Laird and Jorge Vazquez to spot Trenton a 2-0 lead.

The lead increased to three in the second as Niesen's command struggles persisted. The lefty walked a pair of men and hit a batter to load the bases with one out, resulting in his departure. Eddie Kunz spelled Niesen and walked the first man he faced, Austin Krum, forcing home Marcos Vecchionacci

Binghamton (30-31) finally tallied in the fourth inning against Pendleton. Nick Evans led off the with a double and moved up to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Hernandez plated Evans with a sacrifice fly to center, getting the B-Mets back into the game 3-1.

The deficit shrunk to one in the sixth inning. Jon Malo doubled down the third base line to reach opening the frame. Pendleton was an out away from avoiding the run, but Hernandez grounded a single off the glove of Vecchionacci at first that caromed into shallow right, allowing Malo to motor home from second. D.J. Wabick followed Hernandez and hammered a high fastball from the starter, sending it deep into the night in right-center, but the strong wind blowing in from right knocked the ball down and it was caught at the warning track by Daniel Brewer, maintaining the 3-2 margin.

Pendleton tied a season-best with seven innings of work. It marked the third time this season that that Kingwood, TX native had fired seven frames. He improved to 4-3 with the victory.

Tempers flared on both sides in the seventh inning causing benches two clear and two ejections. Pitching coach Mark Brewer was tossed by home plate umpire Jon Saphire as was Thunder designated hitter Jorge Vazquez, who approached the B-Mets dugout wielding a bat, causing the bullpens and benches to empty. However, cooler heads prevailed the rest of the way.

Trenton (36-23) put the game away in the eighth with a three runs off reliever Manuel Alvarez. Justin Christian plated two with a Baltimore chop single to shortstop that bounced over the head of Hernandez, who was playing on the grass with the bases loaded. Austin Krum added an RBI single to round out the scoring.

Kevin Whelan held the B-Mets down in the final two innings, striking out three en route to his first save of the year.

Binghamton is now 0-5 this year at Waterfront Park. The B-Mets looks to rebound in the middle game of the three-game set Saturday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Chris Schwinden (1-3, 7.32) goes for Binghamton and Trenton will counter with RHP D.J. Mitchell (4-3, 4.94).
