POINT STREAK TO FOUR GAMES- Wichita closed out a busy week, claiming all but one point in four games. On Wednesday, Wichita finished off its three-game set against Rapid City and lost in a shootout. Konrad Reeder tied the game up with just over five minutes remaining. Thomas Beauregard and Justin Sawyer scored for Wichita. The Rush won 3-2 in a shootout and was the Thunder's first loss in overtime or a shootout at home this year. Right after the game, Wichita jumped on a bus and headed to Moline, IL to face the Quad City Mallards on Friday night for the final time this season. The Thunder scored three-straight goals in the second period and won the game 4-2. Four different players scored and Bryan Hogan earned the win, stopping 42 of 44 shots. Wichita returned home for a pair and won both games against Arizona. In come-from-behind fashion, Wichita trailed heading into the third period on Saturday and was able to score twice to win 2-1. The next day was a different story as the Thunder dominated the first period before pulling away with a 4-0 win over the Sundogs to sweep the season-series, winning all four games.
ONE TO CLINCH- With Sunday's win against the Sundogs, Wichita needs one point to claim both a division title and the Governor's Cup. The Thunder lead Allen by eight points in the race for the number one seed in the Berry Conference and also lead Fort Wayne by eight points in the race for the Governor's Cup. With a Thunder win or a loss in overtime or a shootout by both Allen and Fort Wayne, Wichita will achieve both feats and claim home-ice during the playoffs.
SETTING NEW HEIGHTS- Wichita leads the league with 43 victories after yesterday's win against the Sundogs. The Thunder is the only team in the league that has more than 40 wins and has a chance to set a new franchise record with four games left. The best Thunder record all-time is 44-18-4 back in the 1994-95 season and is the last time Wichita won a championship.
ROAD WARRIORS- Since the beginning of February, Wichita has gone 10-2-0 in its last 12 road games. Against the Turner Conference, Wichita is 11-3-2 away from home. After starting out slow on the road, Wichita is now 19-10-2 with only two road games left on the schedule. The Thunder all-time record for road wins is 20, which happened in 1994-95.
MILESTONES- Matt Robinson scored twice over the weekend and now sits alone in eighth place all-time in Thunder franchise history with 72 goals. The MVP-candidate has 33 goals this season and is tied in fourth place in goals scored this season.
HOME COOKIN'- The Thunder won two more games on home-ice this weekend and now has 24 wins at INTRUST Bank Arena. The Thunder all-time record for home wins is 26, set back in 1993-94. Against the Berry Conference, Wichita is an impressive 15-2-0 at home this season.
COMEBACK KINGS- Wichita leads the league in wins when trailing after two periods and added to that number this past Saturday. Arizona had a 1-0 lead heading into the final period before Matt Robinson and Chris Chappell scored to get the Thunder past the Sundogs, 2-1. When trailing after two, Wichita is 8-9-0 this season. Every other team in the league has double-digit losses in that category.
PENALTY BUSTERS- Wichita's penalty killing unit has jumped up to eighth-place in the league and has been tremendous over the last 10 games. The Thunder has only allowed two power play goals against in the last 42 chances for the opposition. In the last five games, Wichita has gone a perfect 24-for-24 on the penalty kill. The Thunder stopped all six power play chances this past Friday against the top-ranked unit in Quad City and six on Sunday against Arizona.
