RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Bloomington Blaze, presented by Mid-Illini Credit Union, broke open a back-and-forth game with two third-period goals to defeat the Rapid City Rush 5-3 on Monday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena.
The Rush opened scoring with 16:38 left in the first period when Shawn Limpright took a sharp-angled pass from Jesse Schultz at the right post for the quick score, with the second assist given to Riley Weselowski. The Blaze picked up the equalizer with 5:19 left in the opening period on the game's first power play when Jordy Trottier fed Aaron Dawson in the deep slot, and the veteran defenseman found the back of the net on the stick side. Brandon Richardson earned the second assist, and the teams remained tied 1-1 at the first intermission.
Rapid City broke the tie only eight seconds into the second period with Limpright's second goal of the game, assisted by Schultz and Collin Circelli. The Blaze tied the contest with 12:15 left in the middle frame when Jason Dale made a nifty move in the slot and shelfed the puck inside the left post, with the assist given to Aaron Dawson. The Rush regained the lead at 3-2 when Limpright fed Circelli at the right circle and his wrister found the cage with 7:18 left in the second period. Less than a minute later with 6:23 left, Jerry Pollastrone wristed one home from the left circle to even the game at 3-3, with assists to Travis Granbois and Ryan Palmer to keep the back-and-forth affair even after two periods.
The Blaze earned their first lead of the game at 4-3 with 10:13 left in the third period when Jordy Trottier slapped a rebound home in a flurry in front of the net, assisted by Brandon Richardson and Jon Booras. Booras sealed the win when he intercepted a pass at the Rush blue line, skated in and deked Rush goalie Tim Boron for Booras's 26th goal of the season.
Brian Mahoney-Wilson earned the win with 35 saves to improve his Blaze record to 5-7-1, while Tim Boron took the loss with 26 saves. The Blaze end a three-game losing streak and move back into a sixth-place tie with Dayton in the Turner Conference with a 24-32-7 record, while the Rush remain in third in the Turner with a mark of 36-21-6. The Rush came up empty on five power play chances as the Blaze converted one of their two man advantages.
