Thunder Stifles Baysox Bats

June 3, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

Trenton, N.J. - The Baysox offense managed only three hits as left-hander Wilkin De La Rosa and the Thunder shut out Bowie 8-0. First baseman Michael Costanzo went 1-4 with a double, but the Baysox finished the night 0-8 with runners in scoring position and were shut out for the third time on the season.

Trenton got on the board with single runs in the first and second innings off Baysox starter Fredy Deza. Colin Curtis took Deza deep for a solo home run in the second inning, his first of the season. In the second inning, James Cooper singled and came around to score on a double by Justin Snyder to put Trenton out in front 2-0. Deza finished his night after 3.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while walking one and striking out two.

Ryan Keefer came on for Deza to start the fourth, holding down the Thunder offense before running into trouble in the sixth. Jesus Montero walked with one out to start the inning, coming around to score on an RBI triple to center by Edwar Gonzalez. Left-hander Ryan Rodriguez came on to replace Keefer, striking out Kevin Smith looking for the second out of the inning. Marcos Vechionacci followed with a grounder to short, but Robert Valido could not handle it as Gonzalez scored and extended the Baysox lead to four.

Rodriguez stayed on for the seventh as Trenton broke the game open, scoring four runs with two outs to put the game out of reach. With Curtis on first and two outs, Trenton reeled off four straight singles to bring three runs across. Right-hander Josh Perrault came on for Rodriguez, allowing a double to Vechionacci before getting out of the inning with the Baysox down 8-0. All four runs were charged to Rodriguez, as the left-handers scoreless streak was snapped at 7.2 innings.

Instead of looking to his bullpen, Baysox skipper Brad Komminsk brought in Valido to pitch in the bottom of the eighth. Valido allowed two walks before getting Jesus Montero looking to end the inning and record his first professional strikeout.

Right-hander Kanekoa Texeira worked the final three innings to pick up his second save of the season for the Thunder, allowing one hit while striking out two.

The two teams close out their five-game set with an 11:05 a.m. finale tomorrow in Trenton. LHP Troy Patton (6-1, 1.75) takes the mound in search of his league leading seventh win of the season. He will be matched up against RHP Christian Garcia (1-0, 0.60) for the Thunder.
