Rock Cats Receive Two Promising Pitchers

June 3, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - For the second consecutive day, the New Britain Rock Cats had two roster transactions today - and these most recent moves have a pair of highly-regarded Pitchers joining the Eastern League club from Ft. Myers in the Florida State League.

Joining the Rock Cats are:

RHP Alex Burnett, a 21-year-old 12th Round selection in 2005 out of Ocean View High (CA), arrives from Ft. Myers to bolster the New Britain bullpen corps. The 6'0"/209-pound reliever - now in his fifth season of pro ball - made 18 appearances out of the 2009 Miracle bullpen, posting 4 Saves and a 1.99 ERA over 22.2 innings of work. In the Single-A, Florida State League this year, the Anaheim, CA native compiled 26 Ks while walking just 7; he was unscored upon in his last 10 outings for the Miracle. A 2007 Midwest League All-Star, Burnett will attempt to fill the void created in the Rock Cats bullpen by yesterday's promotion of RHP Rob Delaney.

RHP Carlos Gutierrez, a 1st Round pick (27th overall) in 2008 out of the University of Miami, arrives in New Britain after having posted the best ERA (1.32) of any starting pitcher in the 2009 Florida State League. The 6'3"/205-pound former Miami Hurricane features a moving fastball and exceptional sinker; he allowed just 8 earned runs in 54.2 innings of work in Ft. Myers this year. In 11 total 2009 appearances, the Miami, FL native compiled a 2-3 W-L record. It is expected that he will join the Rock Cats starting rotation.

Both players will be in uniform tonight when the Rock Cats travel to Norwich to take on the Defenders at Dodd Stadium.

The New Britain Rock Cats are the Eastern affiliate of the American League's Minnesota Twins.
