Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Portland, ME) - RF Ryan Kalish (3-for-5, 2 RBI) snapped a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading the Portland Sea Dogs (26-26) in a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Binghamton Mets (22-28) on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. LHP Roydrick Merritt blew his third save of the season for the Mets - all against the Sea Dogs.
Portland trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning and faced new pitcher RHP Julio De La Cruz, who suffered his second loss of the year. The Sea Dogs loaded the bases on walks to CF Bubba Bell (4-for-4, BB) and LF Aaron Bates (2-for-4, 3 RS) - 3B Jorge Jimenez singled. Merritt relieved De La Cruz and yielded a 2-run single to 1B Lars Anderson (4-for-5, 2 RBI) to tie the game at four. After DH Jon Still struck out, Kalish's single gave Portland their 3rd walk-off win and second against the Mets at Hadlock Field.
RHP Chad Rhoades (4-0) allowed a run on two hits in the 9th inning but earned the victory for the Sea Dogs. Starter RHP Ryne Lawson took a no-decision, yielding seven hits and three runs over 6 IP. Binghamton starter RHP Ryan Coultas fired six strong innings on nine hits, two runs, no walks and fanned four in his 4th no-decision of the season.
The Sea Dogs had a multi-hit inning in 6 of 9 frames and collected 16 hits, going 3-for-16 with runners-in-scoring position. Anderson, Bates, Bell, Jimenez, and Kalish all had multi-hit performances for Portland. CF Emmanuel Garcia led Binghamton's 10-hit attack with 4 hits and 2 RBI. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in third inning on a run-scoring ground out by Garcia. Portland tied the game on Anderson's double in the fourth inning, scoring Bates.
Binghamton scored twice off Lawson in the fifth inning on a double by Garcia and a wall-ball triple by C Josh Thole (league's best hitter). Portland responded in their half of the sixth inning on Kalish's run-scoring single to plate Bates. Thole gave the Mets their final lead of the night with a double in the ninth inning off Rhoades.
