Altoona Curve (16-35) at Erie SeaWolves (30-20)
Wednesday, June 3 - 7:05 p.m.
Jerry Uht Park - Erie, PA
Game #52 Road Game #29
FOR ALTOONA: 6'6 Right hander Mike Crotta starts for the Curve tonight. Crotta is in his fourth year in the Pirates organization. He spent all of 2008 in A-Lynchburg where he went 9-10 with a 4.67 ERA. This will be his 10th start of the '09 season. He has allowed five or more runs in two of his last three outings including a 4.1 inning effort where he allowed six runs on seven hits against Trenton in his last start. Against Erie Crotta has excelled tossing 11.1 innings and giving up just two runs (1.59 ERA) in two starts against the SeaWolves.
FOR ERIE: Righty Alfredo Figaro is on the mound for Erie tonight. A fifth year player out of the Dominican Republic, Figaro is in his first season in AA. Last year with W. Michigan (A) he excelled going 12-2 in 19 starts with a 2.05 ERA and 96 strikeouts including two complete game shutouts. Figaro makes his ninth start of the season tonight after his last two starts were sub-par. In his last two outings he allowed 10 runs on 13 innings and seen his ERA jump from 2.61 to 3.75. In his two appearances against the Curve he has pitched 12.2 innings without allowing a run.
LAST TIME OUT: The Curve bats were in full swing for the first four innings of Tuesday night's game as they jumped out to a 9-1 lead, but after tallying 12 hits in four innings the Curve would get just two more the rest of the night as Erie stormed back with 11 unanswered runs in a 12-9 loss.
CURVE/ERIE SERIES: The Altoona Curve and Erie SeaWolves will meet for the 14th time this year of the scheduled 25 total meetings. The 'Wolves are the Curve's most common opponent in 2009...Erie has won 10 of the first 13 contests...Max Leon has been Erie's best against Altoona hitting .385 with 10 RBIs and eight extra base hits ...Curve SS Brian Friday owns a .440 average (11x25) and two home runs in the season series to lead Altoona.
'PEN OUT OF INK? A usually solid Curve bullpen has stumbled recently. The Curve bullpen has given up 54 runs in 62.1 innings for an 7.83 ERA. Three of the Curve's most used relievers, Jeff Sues, Josh Hill, and Shawn Nottingham, have especially struggled combining for 24 runs allowed in their last 13.1 innings good for a 16.2 ERA since 5/25.
DELANEY DELIVERS: After another strong plate performance last night (3x4, 2 RBI), Curve outfielder Jason Delaney has driven home a run in each of the last five games, the longest streak for any Curve player this season. Delaney is also tied for the Curve lead in multi-RBI games with seven.
CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL: The Curve have been crushing the ball lately. Taking opposing pitchers deep for eight home runs in their last five games after hitting just three in their previous 12 games.
