Adirondack Thunder News Release
Glens Falls, NY - - Despite a 40-16 shots on goal advantage, the Adirondack Thunder came up just short as they dropped a 2-1 shootout final against the Elmira Jackals on Tuesday evening at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The shootout loss marked the fourth straight game to open the season where the Thunder have earned a point.
The first period ended scoreless despite a breakaway opportunity by Adirondack's Alex Wall, who nearly opened the scoring but was turned aside by a save from Elmira netminder John Muse. Ken Appleby, in his first start back with Adirondack, was lightly tested during the first period as he was only needed to make a total of three saves. Muse was however kept busy by Adirondack as he notched 19 saves in the opening period.
Adirondack got on the board 1:12 into the second period as Brian Ward put home his third tally in four games, extending his team lead in goals. Thunder captain Peter MacArthur skated the puck down the middle of the ice and dished to Ward on the left wing, who fired a shot by Muse for the finish. MacArthur and defenseman Alex Wall collected the assists on the play, the fourth straight game with a point for Wall.
Late in the second period, Elmira was awarded a power play opportunity and they cashed in with only 3:23 remaining in the period to knot the score at one. With Elmira forward Casey Thrush providing the screen, Jackal blueliner Steven Kaunisto put a seeing-eye wrist shot through the traffic in front and past the blocker of Appleby. Forwards Mike Radja and Daultan Leveille collected the assists on the play, the third point of the season for Leveille.
A scoreless third period sent the game into overtime, Adirondack's third overtime appearance in only four games to start the season. In overtime, forward Dana Fraser nearly sent Adirondack home with the victory with a partial breakaway opportunity, but was unable to convert with a pair of Elmira defensemen on the backcheck.
In the shootout, Elmira forward Tyson Fawcett converted the lone tally of the night as he slipped the puck through the skates of Appleby. MacArthur, Ty Loney and Dennis Kravchenko were all unable to score in the shootout as Adirondack dropped their second straight on home ice.
