Walleye Notes

The week that was: Toledo pushed its winning streak out to four games with a perfect 3-0-0 week. It started with a four goal third period in Cincinnati on Tuesday night that led to a 5-0 win. The Walleye and Brampton Beast played a couple of slugfests on Friday and Saturday nights. Toledo took away 6-5 shootout win on Friday night in Brampton with Tyler Sikura scoring twice. Saturday in the Walleye home opener, Tyson Spink led the way with four goals including the game-winning strike in overtime in yet another 6-5 final.

Watson leads a dandy start: Toledo is 4-1-0 in the first five games of the season, which is the best five game stretch to open a season in Walleye history. The Walleye rocketed to a 3-1-1 start last year on their way to a 47 win season.

Home magic: Once again the home opener was a smashing success seeing 8,000 fans enter the Huntington Center. Since starting play in 2009 every home opener has been a sellout crowd and all of those have been standing room only crowds of at least 8,000.

Spink shoots, Spink scores: Forward Tyson Spink had himself quite a night scoring four times and his last goal sent the fans home happy in overtime to finish the win. It was the first time that the Walleye have had a hat trick scored in the first home game. The big night for Tyson (4G, 3A) has him second in the ECHL scoring race behind only his teammate Kyle Bonis who has 8 points (5G, 3A).

No sense in allowing anything: Goaltender Jake Paterson was on fire Tuesday night in Cincinnati as he turned aside all 39 Cyclones shots leading Toledo to a 5-0 win. The shutout was the third professional one for Paterson after he posted two of them last season. His first came against tonight's opponent the Brampton Beast on January 29, 2016 (4-0 Win) with 28 saves.

The week ahead: Toledo heads back out on the road for a pair of games in Norfolk, Virginia against the Norfolk Admirals on Friday and Saturday. The two teams play a total of three games with Admirals coming to Toledo on March 26, 2017. The two teams played just one time last year, with Toledo taking a 2-1 overtime win on a Beau Schmitz goal.

Walleye Player of the Week:

Tyson Spink (4 goals - 2 assists 6 points)

Walleye Goaltender of the Week:

Jake Paterson (2-0-0, 2.50 GAA, .930 save %)
