Three-Goal Third Gives Thunder 3-1 Win

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The visiting Wichita Thunder scored three times in the third period to erase a deficit and defeat the South Carolina Stingrays (0-1-1-0) by final score of 3-1 Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Forward Patrick Gaul scored his first goal of the season for South Carolina, while rookie netminder Adam Carlson was strong in net for the Stingrays, making 26 saves in a losing effort.
After a scoreless first period, the Rays took a 1-0 lead on Gaul's tally, which came on a 2-on-1 opportunity at 8:37 of the second. After forward Marcus Perrier got the puck out of the defensive zone, forward Rob Flick carried the play into the offensive end for South Carolina on an odd man rush. Flick waited out the defense and put a perfect pass on the stick of Gaul, who quickly one-timed it into the upper portion of the net.
The assists for Flick and Perrier were each their first points of the season.
South Carolina allowed just two shots on net during the middle period, outshooting the Thunder 15-2 in the second.
But the lead wasn't enough as Wichita tied the game at 4:21 of the third period when forward Alexis Loiseau found the back of the net for the first time this year.
Wichita then took its first lead of the game at 11:42 of the final frame, when rookie forward Matt DeBlouw scored his second of the season to make it 2-1.
The Stingrays were unable to find a late equalizer, and the Thunder sealed the game with an empty net goal by forward Alex Krushelnyski at 19:13 of the third period.
South Carolina outshot the Thunder 33-29 on the night, while both teams were scoreless on the power play each finishing 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.
Drew Owsley made 32 saves for Wichita to earn his first victory in his first start of the season, while Carlson took the loss for the Rays despite allowing just two goals in his Stingrays debut.
The Stingrays now head out of state for three games in the Sunshine State. South Carolina takes on Orlando Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. before battling the Florida Everblades Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 7:00. The Rays are back at home next Tuesday night to face the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:05 p.m.
