Thunder Downed in Home Opener

WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder dropped their 2008-2009 home opener 5-1 to the Oklahoma City Blazers on Saturday night. The Thunder grabbed an early lead behind Scott Rozendal's first goal of the year at the 1:24 mark in the first period. However, the Blazers went on to score five unanswered goals, including two from D.J. Jelitto. Jelitto picked up two assists in the game as well.

Wichita missed an opportunity late in the second when Oklahoma City took simultaneous minors at the 16:35 mark, resulting in two full minutes of a Thunder two-man advantage. Wichita was unable to score though and finished the night 0-9 on the power play.

The teams played in front of a more than capacity crowd of 9,560. It marked the second straight year that Wichita sold out its home opener.

Wichita returns to action Tuesday at Oklahoma City, with a 7:10 p.m. scheduled start at the Ford Center. The match kicks off a stretch of three straight road games which will see the Thunder also travel to Rocky Mountain and New Mexico.
