Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - On a night that saw the Amarillo Civic Center celebrate its 40th birthday, the Gorillas dropped their second straight to the New Mexico Scorpions, 6-0.
The energetic Amarillo home crowd was quieted quickly, as New Mexico scored two goals in the first 14 minutes of play. Mitch Stephens scored his third of the season, after an Aaron MacInnis shot from the point deflected into the slot. Just minutes later, Chris Robertson tallied his first goal of the year with after his wrist shot from the left point made it through the legs of a screened Simon Nielsen.
For the second consecutive night, Amarillo entered the second period down 2-0. Torren Delforte scored another Scorpions goal nine minutes into the middle frame to put the visitors up, 3-0. Craig Macdonald followed that up with a rebound goal three minutes later to extend the New Mexico advantage. Delforte would add a shorthanded tally and Matt Cosmos scored his first professional goal before the conclusion of the period, making the score 6-0.
Despite several power plays for both teams, neither could score in the third period, ensuring the shutout for Scorpions netminder Jason Wolfe. Amarillo outshot the Scorpions Saturday, 25-24.
A bright spot for Gorillas fans was 6'4" defenseman Nick Theriault, who twice dropped the gloves with Scorpions players. His first fight, against Cosmos, took place early in the second period. Theriault's next scrap would come with slightly over a minute remaining in the same period, as he battled the Scorpions' Andrew Smale.
The Gorillas will look to bounce back with a pair of games at home next weekend. Friday night they will host the Texas Brahmas, while Saturday, the Colorado Eagles come to Amarillo.
