IceRays set records with 12-3 opening night victory

After a long and winding off-season, the Corpus Christi IceRays returned to action on Saturday Night at the American Bank Center with a game unlike any Corpus Christi hockey fans have seen. The IceRays set an franchise record for goals in a game, finding the back of the net a dozen times in a 12-3 victory over the Tulsa Oilers. The IceRays rode a stellar night on special teams with a CHL record - eight power play goals. Both Chris Richards and Mike Zbriger tallied hat tricks and Richards led all skaters with seven points (3g, 4a). The IceRays improved to 1-0 on the young season and Tulsa dropped to 0-1-1. The game was also highlighted by three separate line brawls as Corpus Christi made an impressionable opening statement in their return to the ice.

The game was close throughout the first 20 minutes with the teams tied 2-2 after one period of play. However, Corpus Christi erupted down the stretch with three goals in the second period and seven tallies in the third. Corpus Christi outscored Tulsa 10-1 in the final 40 minutes. Justin Quenneville had five points in his debut at captain with a goal and four assists. Ryan Bennett also added a goal and three assists. The remaining goals were scored by Jeremy Leroux, Jeff Grant and Adam Powell. Tulsa's three goals came from Brendon Hodge, Jeff Christian and Kai Magnussen. Kris Tebbs earned the IceRays victory in his debut, stopping 37 of 40 shots against. The teams combined for an unofficial post-game count of 51 penalties for 219 penalty minutes.

The IceRays return to the American Bank Center next Friday and Saturday to take on the Rapid City Rush and the Laredo Bucks, respectively.
