
Three Sea Dogs named to Eastern League All-Star Team

Portland, Maine - The Eastern League today announced the 2005 Eastern League All-Star team. Three Sea Dogs were named to the team, the most since 1999. The Eastern League All-Star team is selected by voting as voted on by respective Eastern League team managers and coaching staffs, sportswriters, radio and television broadcast personnel and other members of the media. Left-handed Pitcher Jon Lester, and infielders Hanley Ramirez and Dustin Pedroia were honored for their outstanding play in the 2005 season by the league. The Portland Sea Dogs had no members on the 2004 Eastern League Post-Season All-Star Team and only one member in the two previous years. The Sea Dogs and Erie SeaWolves (Tigers) each have three representatives on the team.
Left-handed Pitcher Jon Lester began the 2005 season ranked as the #4 prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization by Baseball America. Lester emerged throughout the season as the ace of the staff as the team continues their push towards the Eastern League Playoffs. He ranks first in the Eastern League in strikeouts (151) and third in ERA (2.68). Lester has pitched three complete games in the 2005 season. On May 29th at Norwich, he pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out eight. On July 11th, Lester set the Sea Dogs franchise record for strikeouts in a game with 13 in a seven-inning complete game shutout at New Hampshire. On August 1st against New Britain, Lester tossed nine-innings to earn the win in his third complete game of the season. He also represented the Sea Dogs in the 2005 Hannaford Eastern League All-Star Game held at Hadlock Field.
Infielder Hanley Ramirez came into the 2005 season ranked as the top prospect in the Red Sox organization for the third straight season and the #10 prospect in all of Minor League Baseball by Baseball America. The 21-year old shortstop is also rated the Fastest Baserunner, Best Athlete, Best Defensive Infielder, and as possessing the Best Infield Arm in the Boston organization by Baseball America. Ramirez was the Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year for Single-A Sarasota in 2004. In 112 games with the Sea Dogs, he owns a .277 average with 19 doubles, seven triples, six home runs, and 51 RBI. His 26 stolen bases lead the team. Ramirez has hit safely in 13 of the last 17 games. Along with Lester, Ramirez also represented Portland in the 2005 Hannaford Eastern League All-Star Game.
Infielder Dustin Pedroia entered the 2005 season as the #6 prospect and ranked as having the Best Strike-Zone Discipline in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America. Pedroia began the season with the Sea Dogs and played 66 games before being promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket on June 22nd. In his time in Portland, Pedroia hit .324 with 19 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, and 40 RBI. He walked 34 times, while striking out only 26 times. His .409 on-base percentage was among the league leaders at the time of his promotion. Since joining Pawtucket, Pedroia owns a .268 average with four home runs, one triple, eight doubles, and 21 RBI.
