B-Mets shut out at Trenton
August 26, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Former big leaguer Calvin Maduro and two Trenton Thunder relievers combined to shut out the Binghamton Mets, 4-0 in the series opener at Waterfront Park Friday. It's just the fourth time this year the B-Mets have been blanked, as they lost for the first time in three days.
Trenton (68-64) got the only run it would wind up needing in the second. After B-Mets starter Luz Portobanco retired the inning's first two hitters, he hit J.T. Stotts, gave up a single to Ramiro Pena and a walk to Gabe Lopez, loading the bases. Portobanco (2-11) then walked Bronson Sardinha, forcing in Pena.
The Thunder loaded the bases against Portobanco again in the third before Stotts drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Pena singled in another for a 3-0 Trenton advantage. Trenton got its final run off reliever Blake McGinley in the fourth when Melky Cabrera hit a one-out double and came home when Michael Coleman followed with a single.
Meanwhile, the B-Mets (58-74) managed just four hits in 7 2/3 innings off Maduro (3-1), with third baseman Russ Triplett picking up three of them. Justin Pope struck out the only man he faced to record his 26th save.
Saturday, the B-Mets continue their four-game series at Trenton with a day-night doubleheader. The first game will begin at 1:35 with a 1:20 broadcast time on Newsradio 1290 WNBF. Bryan Edwards (5-5, 3.49) will start that one for the B-Mets against Trenton's Jeff Karstens (11-11, 4.03). Reliever Tim McNab (1-4, 6.29) will get a spot start for the B-Mets in Game Two, which begins at 7:05, with a 6:50 broadcast time on WNBF.
