Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
A three-run sixth for Pawtucket cost the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (12-11) in an 8-3 loss to the visiting Red Sox (12-12) on Monday night at Coca-Cola Park.
The Pigs had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the eighth, but LHP Robby Scott (0.2 IP, H, BB) was able to get Cam Perkins to ground out to the catcher and end the threat.
In the afore-mentioned three-run sixth, Sam Travis reached on a two-out single and scored on Rusney Castillo's go-ahead RBI double. Justin Maxwell followed Castillo with a two-run shot to give the Red Sox the 5-2 advantage. It was Maxwell's second home run of the season.
Cedric Hunter's two-run double in the home half of the second gave the IronPigs an early 2-0 lead.
The PawSox tied things at two apiece with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Maxwell led off with a single, advanced to second on an error charged to Perkins and scored on Sandy Leon's RBI double. Leon would advance to third on a sac bunt and came home on an error charged to Lehigh Valley starter David Buchanan.
The IronPigs had the bases loaded with one out in the home half of the frame, but Pawtucket starter William Cuevas was able to get Taylor Featherston to pop out and Nick Williams to line out to second and escape the jam.
Marco Hernandez's two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh stretched the Pawtucket lead to 6-2.
Buchanan (0-2) allowed the six runs (four earned) while fanning three over six plus innings of work.
Hunter's (3-3, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R) solo shot off of Cuevas in the home half of the seventh brought the Pigs within 6-3.
Cuevas (3-1) gave up the three runs on five hits to go along with three walks and four strikeouts in 7.2 IP.
With a single in the second, Perkins extended his hitting streak to 14 games, which is the longest in the International League this season.
A pair of runs in the ninth opened up an 8-3 lead for Pawtucket as Jantzen Witte and Ryan LaMarre each came through with an RBI double in the inning.
Darnell Sweeney (2-5) also had a multi-hit game for the IronPigs.
RHP Severino Gonzalez (1.0 IP, H, K) and RHP Gregory Infante (1.0 IP, BB) each had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The series continues on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Jake Thompson (1-3, 6.16) gets the ball for the Pigs against LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (0-1, 4.91) who is making a rehab start for Pawtucket.
