International League Names Players of the Week
May 2, 2016 - International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Columbus third baseman Giovanny Urshela and Indianapolis pitcher Tyler Glasnow have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from April 25-ÂMay 1.  Glasnow follows the previous Batter of the Week, Josh Bell, to make Indianapolis the first club to win multiple IL weekly awards in 2016.  Prior to Urshela, the last player from Columbus to be so honored was Audy Ciriaco (Aug. 24-Â30, 2015).
GIOVANNY URSHELA, Columbus Clippers IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Clippers third baseman Giovanny Urshela authored an impressive individual turn-Âaround this week.  He entered play Monday hitting just .186 with one homer and 3 RBI for the season.  This week was an entirely different story, as Urshela reeled off a seven-Âgame hitting streak in which he batted .455 and led the League with 10 RBI and seven runs scored.  He drove in at least one run in six of those contests, which were all victories for the League's hottest team.  Columbus has now won eleven straight games and owns Triple-ÂA Baseball's best record (16-Â7).  Urshela is the team leader in runs (11) and RBI (13). 24-Âyear-Âold Giovanny Urshela is in his eighth season as a professional player after being signed by Cleveland as a non-Âdrafted free agent in 2008.  He was the organization's Minor League Player of the Year in 2014.  He's appeared in 81 games with the Indians since 2014.  Urshela is a native of Cartagena, Colombia.
TYLER GLASNOW, Indianapolis Indians IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Right-Âhander Tyler Glasnow turned in a pair of scoreless outings for his Indianapolis Indians this week, defeating Durham and Norfolk behind a League-Âbest 18 strikeouts.  Tuesday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Glasnow fanned eleven and allowed just two hits and a walk in 6.0 innings to lead the Indians to a 9-Â0 shutout victory.  He followed that up with 5.0 more scoreless frames at home on Sunday against the Tides to improve his record to 2-Â1.  Glasnow leads the League with 37 strikeouts this season.  He's part of an Indians rotation that has held opponents to one run or fewer in ten straight games.  22-Âyear-Âold Tyler Glasnow is in his fifth season as a professional pitcher after being selected by Pittsburgh in the 5th round of the 2011 draft.  He's a two-Âtime Pirates Minor League Pitcher of the Year and has been rated the organization's top overall prospect by MLB.com and Baseball America.  He has yet to make his Major League debut.  Glasnow is a native of Newhall, California.
