
Three-Run Delmarva 3rd Enough for Birds in 4-2 Win

SALISBURY, MD - Yermin Mercedes drove in two runs while John Means gave up one run in five innings to earn his ninth win as Delmarva topped the BlueClaws 4-2 on Sunday at Perdue Stadium.
The win gives the Shorebirds (24-25/56-61) wins in two of the three games with the BlueClaws (28-21/61-56) this weekend and Lakewood falls to 4-11 against Delmarva this year with eight meetings left between the two clubs.
Lakewood took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single from Damek Tomshca.
Delmarva responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, tying the game on an infield single by Yermin Mercedes. They took the lead on a throwing error by shortstop Drew Stankiewciz and added a run on an RBI single from Elier Leyva to go up 3-1. The Shorebirds added a fourth run off Lakewood starter Tyler Viza in the fifth inning on an error by right fielder Herlis Rodriguez.
Viza came out after five innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits, six in the three-run third inning. He tied his career high with nine strikeouts in the game.
Delmarva starter John Means went five innings and exited after allowing one run. He earned the win to improve to 9-8 on the season. Tanner Scott gave up one run in two innings while Max Schuh threw two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.
Herlis Rodriguez singled on the first pitch of the game for the BlueClaws to extend his hitting streak to 17, seven off the franchise record of 24 set by Jiwan James in 2010. Drew Stankiewicz added two hits for Lakewood and has five hits in the last two games.
These teams now play three in Lakewood beginning Monday night. RHP Ranfi Casimiro (7-6) starts Monday for Lakewood while the Shorebirds will start RHP Dariel Delgado (4-3).
