SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds edged out the Lakewood BlueClaws in the series finale, notching a tight 4-2 victory for a series win. The Shorebirds (57-60) improved to 32-27 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium this season with another win in front of the home crowd.

John Means and Tyler Viza squared off in a battle of top-10 ERAs in the South Atlantic League. Means allowed a run to Lakewood in the third on a two-out RBI single by Damek Tomscha. The Shorebirds' starter buckled down and did not surrender any more runs in his five innings of work.

The BlueClaws' starter suffered some bad luck in the bottom half of the third. Delmarva scored three runs on six singles and an error, with only one hard hit line drive in the frame. The Shorebirds took advantage of three infield singles, including run-scoring swinging bunts by Yermin Mercedes and Elier Leyva.

Delmarva added to their lead in the fifth, building a 4-1 advantage. Cam Kneeland laced a leadoff double, his 22nd two-bagger of the season, most on the team. Mercedes lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, though Herlis Rodriguez dropped the catch, so Kneeland scored without a contest.

Lakewood tightened the game with a run in the seventh, but Tanner Scott minimized the damage. A single and two walks loaded the bases with no outs. Scott induced a double play grounder to allow just one run in the frame, holding onto a 4-2 lead.

Max Schuh recorded the final six outs for the first save of his professional career. John Means tallied his ninth win, retaking the Shorebirds' team lead. Means also dropped his ERA to 3.50, eighth-best in the league. Viza dropped to 4-8 with another tough luck loss for Lakewood.

Delmarva will play Lakewood again, now on the road in New Jersey. Right-hander Dariel Delgado (4-3, 3.82) starts the opener opposite right-hander Ranfi Casimiro (7-6, 3.07) for Lakewood. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at FirstEnergy Park.
