Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Leading 6-4, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (2-3) allowed three runs in the ninth in a 7-6 loss to the Rochester Red Wings (3-3) on Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field.
With runners at the corners and two outs, Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a walk-off single into the right centerfield gap to give the Red Wings the win. The other runs in the frame came on a throwing error charged to Pigs catcher Andrew Knapp which allowed Wilfredo Tovar to scamper home from third for a very close play at the plate and an RBI single from Buck Britton.
All three runs were charged to Pigs RHP Edward Mujica (0-1) who allowed the three runs on five hits in 0.2 IP.
RHP Brandon Kintzler (2.0 IP, H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, K) got the win for Rochester and is now 2-0 on the season.
The IronPigs had taken a 6-4 lead in the top of the ninth via a David Lough RBI bloop single and a Nick Williams sac fly.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth as Pigs starter David Buchanan and Red Wings starter Tyler Duffey traded zeroes.
Lehigh Valley grabbed a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth as Brock Stassi drove home a run with an RBI double and Tommy Joseph plated another with an RBI single.
Duffey (n/d) allowed the two runs on six hits while walking four and fanning four in 4.2 IP.
Rochester would quickly answer with three runs in the home half of the frame to take a 3-2 lead for the time being. Heiker Meneses came through with a two-run single and scored on a Darin Mastroianni RBI double later in the inning.
All three runs were charged to Buchanan (n/d) who gave up the three runs on five hits to go along with a walk and two strikeouts in five innings of work.
In the top of the sixth, Lough (4-6, RBI, R) led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and came around to score on a Williams RBI single which knotted things at three apiece for the Pigs.
In the top of the seventh, Tommy Joseph (2-3, 2B, RBI, R) doubled off the wall in right to start the inning, moved to third on an infield single and scored when Ryan Jackson grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to give the IronPigs a 4-3 advantage.
Rochester tied it at four with a run in the seventh as James Beresford led off with a single, advanced to second on a sac bunt and scored on Mastroianni's RBI single. The Wings had runners at second and third with one out in the inning, but Bobby LaFromboise (1.2 IP, H, 2 K) was able to get a groundout and lineout to escape the jam. The run was charged to RHP Reinier Roibal (1.1 IP, 3 H, R, ER, BB, K).
Taylor Featherston (3-3, R) also had a multi-hit game for Lehigh Valley.
The IronPigs return home to begin a two-game set with the Pawtucket Red Sox on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jake Thompson (0-1, 1.80) will be on the bump for the Pigs against former Lehigh Valley RHP Sean O'Sullivan (0-1, 3.86) who toes the rubber for the PawSox.
