Wings starter Tyler Duffey pitched four scoreless innings last Thursday in the season opener, before rain suspended play in Scranton. On Wednesday, Duffey set down the first two batters on just three pitches, then walked the next two batters. A flyout got Duffey out of the jam.
Lehigh Valley's David Buchanan was making his first appearance of the season, with the IronPigs' early season schedule impacted by rain and cold.
Both starters posted four shutout innings, with Buchanan allowing just a walk and single. He was helped out by a diving catch by right fielder Nick Williams, who robbed Heiker Meneses of an extra base hit in the third inning.
Lehigh Valley picked up two runs in the top of the fifth, with Brock Stassi and Tommy Joseph delivering RBI hits. Loek van Mil relieved Duffey with two outs in the fifth; Duffey allowed six hits, two earned runs and four walks with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. Duffey threw 96 pitches, 50 for strikes.
The Wings rallied for a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth against Buchanan, with a two-run single from Meneses and Darin Mastroianni's RBI double the key hits.
Buchanan completed five innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs and a walk with two strikeouts. He threw 77 pitches, 52 for strikes. Reiner Roibal came on in relief of Buchanan.
The IronPigs tied the score against van Mil in the sixth inning, then Buddy Boshers came in as relief for van Mil and got two quick outs to strand a pair of runners. The IronPigs regained the lead with a run off Boshers in the seventh.
James Beresford led off the bottom of the seventh with his second hit of the game, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Meneses, and scored on a bloop single by Mastroianni to tie the score at 4-4. Bobby LaFromboise took over on the mound, and his wild pitch put runners at second and third with just one out. But the Wings couldn't cash in on the scoring opportunity, and the game remained tied.
Brandon Kintzler took over on the mound to start the eighth inning, and struck out Max Venable with a runner on third for the third out. The Wings had another chance in their half of the eighth. Rodriguez blooped a hit to right, and hustled his way to a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded and the game went to the ninth.
Kintzler walked Joseph to start the ninth, and pinch-runner Cam Perkins went to second on a wild pitch. Kintzler hit Taylor Featherston with a pitch, giving the IronPigs two on with none out. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third base with one out, and a bloop hit from David Lough dropped into left field to give Lehigh Valley a 5-4 lead. They added another run on a sacrifice fly to move ahead 6-4.
The Wings rallied in the ninth against Edward Mujica. Wilfredo Tovar reached on an infield single and stole second base. After a popout, Mastroianni's third hit of the game moved Tovar over to third. When Mastroianni stole second, Tovar hustled home after a throwing error by catcher Andrew Knapp on the steal attempt. Buck Britton's single scored Mastroianni, and the Wings pulled even at 6-6. Kennys Vargas singled to right, which moved Britton to third base with two outs. That's when Rodriguez drilled a 2-2 pitch to the gap in right-center, his third - and most important - hit of the game. The hit gave Kintzler (2-0) the win in relief, with Mujica (0-1) taking the loss.
Mastroianni had three hits and two RBI, and Beresford has two hits and scored twice. The Wings out-hit the IronPigs 14-13, and Wings pitchers combined to issue nine walks.
