Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
HOME AWAY FROM HOME: Aaron Judge had four hits and a pair of crooked numbers carried the RailRiders to a 9-1 drubbing of the Pawtucket Red Sox on Tuesday night. The RailRiders have won 14 of 17 at McCoy Stadium.
HERE COMES THE JUDGE: Judge's four hits tied a career-high mark set on June 30 of last season at Lehigh Valley when he went 4-for-4. He has hit safely in all five of the team's games this season. After going 4-for-6 with an RBI double and two runs scored last night, he has gone 9-for-23 (.391/.417/.522/.938) in five games this year.
MULLEE IT OVER: Reliever Conor Mullee (1-0) retired all 10 he faced while striking out six en route to the win. The outing resembled the second of his two efforts with last season's SWB club. On Sept. 5, 2015, Mullee whiffed five over two perfect innings at Syracuse.
AT THE START: Opening Day man Chad Green issued a career-worst five walks over his 3.2 innings. His previous high of four came on Aug. 14, 2015 at New Hampshire when he settled for a no-decision in a 5-4 team win for Erie club.
LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Gamel, last season's IL Rookie of the Year, has broken out of his early season funk. He entered the series 1-for-13 with no walks and five strikeouts as the everyday leadoff man. After going 3-for-4 on Monday while falling a home run short of the cycle, he posted a 2-for-4 night with a walk and a run scored yesterday. As the fourth SWB outfielder to begin 2015, he hit .383/.448/.617/1.064 last April en route to a season-long slashes of .300/.358/.472/.830. That included a league-best 14 triples. In 17 games played against Pawtucket last season, Gamel slashed .314/.351/.571/.923 with three homers and 11 RBIs.
WHAT GOES UP: Slade Heathcott entered last night with a team-best seven hits. He finished Tuesday's tilt as the lone man in the lineup without a hit. As the three-hole hitter and DH, he went 0-for-6 with a career-worst-tying four strikeouts. He had previously suffered four whiffs in a game three times, most recently in an 0-for-4 effort on May 31, 2011 at Savannah while with Low-A Charleston.
FEAST OR FAMINE: The RailRiders have failed to score in 34 of their 42 innings through five games. Of their 23 runs scored this season, 19 have come between four frames: a six-run sixth versus Rochester on Friday; Monday's five-run fifth; and last night with a three-run first and five in the fourth. Last year's RailRiders ranked among the IL's best in batting average (1st, .271), runs scored (1st, 4.3/game), on-base percentage (1st, .339) and slugging (4th, .389).
NEMESIS: The RailRiders posted more wins against Pawtucket (13-6) than any other team in 2015. They went 5-3 in the Ocean State and 8-3 at PNC Field. They have taken 10 of 13 and 21 of 27 in the series going back to 2014. That includes wins in 14 of 17 at McCoy Stadium, outscoring the PawSox, 84-41.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders led the IL with 42 road wins last season...They also posted the most divisional wins in the circuit, going 52-38 (.578) against their IL North brothers...SWB pitching struck out 13 last night...The offense went 6-for-18 with men in scoring position, stranding a dozen...Rob Refsnyder started at second base for the first time this season...He also tripled in a run and scored...Usual first baseman Chris Parmelee halted an 0-for-10 start to his year with an RBI single in the fourth...He also walked twice and scored once...The RailRiders have outhit Pawtucket on the series, 23-12...Gary Sanchez nabbed Marco Hernandez in a third-inning stolen-base attempt at second...Sanchez is 3-for-3 in dispatching of would-be base stealers...He also finished with an RBI double, a walk, a run scored and his first passed ball of 2016.
