Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD- Sioux Falls (20-24) got off to a fast start on Tuesday evening when David Bergin, Richard Stock and Brian Humphries all hit towering homeruns to pace the Canaries offense. The Canaries went on to win the contest by a final of 9-2 to take game two from the Lincoln Saltdogs (15-29) at Sioux Falls Stadium.
It all started in the bottom of the first when David Bergin hit a solo homerun over the left field wall. Richard Stock soon followed as he pulled a well hit ball over the right field wall. Finally, Brian Humphries picked up a homerun of his own by blasting a solo shot into deep left field.
The Birds' decided to pick up a few more runs in the bottom of the second with an RBI single from Vickash Ramjit and Richard Stock. From there on, the cruise was set for Canaries starter Joe Bircher as he would go on to retire nine straight Lincoln hitters. Bircher picked up his third win in a Canaries uniform as he tossed 5 1/3 innings on five hits and only giving up one earned run.
Lincoln did answer with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the damage was limited. Chris Paterson called on relief pitcher Josh Ferrell to retire the remaining Saltdog batters.
Sioux Falls picked up three insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh when Humphries recorded a two RBI single and Jason Repko hit a shallow RBI single into center field.
Lincoln starter Kevin McGovern picked up his third loss as he threw 6 2/3 innings on twelve hits while giving up nine earned runs.
The Canaries are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host their final "Daycare Day" of the season. Sioux Falls will send Shawn Blackwell (1-5, 3.60 ERA) to the mound in search of his second win in a Birds' uniform. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 PM with gates opening at 11 AM.
