Blame Canada, Saints Lose to Ottawa 2-1

ST. PAUL, MN (July 7, 2015) - For the second time this season the St. Paul Saints utilized Drew Gay in a spot start. The Ottawa Champions countered with their own Drew, Drew Cisco, who was making his first start in two weeks since coming off the disabled list. In the end the Saints lost for just the 10th time this season 2-1 on Tuesday night at CHS Field in front of 7,432.

The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Willie Argo singled to center. He moved to second on a groundout by Vinny DiFazio and Argo came around to score on a single by Ian Gac.

The Champions tied it in the second when Chris Winder walked with one out. He moved to second on a single from Daniel Bick and scored on an Albert Cartwright double.

In the third the Saints had an opportunity to take the lead when Gac doubled with one out. Songco singled him to third, but Mike Kvasnicka grounded into his first of two double plays on the night.

In the fifth the Champions added the final run of the game as Mike Schwartz walked with one out. He moved to second on a single by Bryce Massanari and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs Alex Nunez singled to left scoring Schwartz, but Songco threw out Massanari trying to score to keep it a 2-1 game. Saints starter Gay went 6.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out four.

In the seventh the Saints got a leadoff single from Anthony Phillips and he was sacrificed to second by Dan Kaczrowski. Alonzo Harris grounded out and Willie Argo walked to put the tying and go ahead runs aboard. DiFazio, however, grounded out to end the inning.

In the ninth Joey Paciorek led off with a single off the first base bag. Phillips, however, popped up a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch sent pinch runner Mitch Elliott to second, but Champions closer Alan DeRatt struck out Kaczrowski and Harris to end the game. Harris went 0-5 ending his hitting streak at 13 games.

The same two teams meet in game three of the four game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at CHS Field. The Saint send LHP Kramer Sneed (7-1, 2.20) to the mound against Champions LHP Andrew Werner (5-3, 3.76). The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive tube socks presented by St. Croix Orthopaedics. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities, heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 97.9 FM.
