Kansas City Monarchs News Release
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - For the first time in a week, the Kansas City T-Bones could not rely on timely hitting as the club saw its six-game winning streak come to an end in a 4-3 loss to Grand Prairie in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
After the AirHogs tied the game, 3-3, in the fifth inning of the seven-inning game on an RBI single by Jamodrick McGruder, and then took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to left by Chris Elder, the T-Bones squandered prime opportunities to score during the final two innings.
In the sixth, Kansas City had runners at second and third with no outs after back-to-back singles by Adam Bailey and Kyle Robinson. But then Vladimir Frias flew out to left, Bailey was thrown out at home on a grounder to third by Robby Kuzdale, and then Kuzdale was forced out at second on a grounder by Brian Erie.
The T-Bones once again had runners at second and third, this time with one out, in the seventh, before Jake Blackwood struck out and Kyle Robinson ended the game with a groundout.
Kansas City starter Kyle Brady, who did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs in 4 1/3 innings, struggled through the first inning. The first two batters, McGruder and Ronnie Richardson, singled, with Richardson knocking in McGruder and giving the AirHogs an early 1-0 lead.
Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, though, the T-Bones offense came alive against Grand Prairie starter Stetson Nelson (3-0) as Nate Tenbrink hit an RBI single to center that scored Brian Erie. Tenbrink then advanced to second on a bad throw home by Elder, Grand Prairie's centerfielder. Blackwood followed with an RBI double to right center, scoring Tenbrink. Bailey finished out the scoring with an RBI single to deep left that scored Blackwood, and gave Kansas City a 3-2 lead.
Kansas City (21-17) and Grand Prairie (18-26) played game two of the doubleheader later Tuesday night.
