Double Header Tonight

July 7, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Amarillo ThunderHeads News Release

Mother Nature never gave the Amarillo ThunderHeads a chance Monday night.

The ThunderHeads will play a doubleheader tonight thanks to Monday's rain.

Amarillo and the Joplin Blasters were scheduled to open a four-game series Monday night at Thunderhead Stadium but heavy rains forced the game to be postponed.

Amarillo and Joplin will play a 6 p.m. doubleheader tonight at ThunderHead Stadium with both games scheduled to go seven innings.

Amarillo's home series against Joplin continues with 7:05 p.m. games Wednesday and Thursday.

Amarillo owns a 20-23 record sitting in fourth place of the American Association South Division.

Joplin leads the South Division at 25-15.

Tonight will be the first meeting of the year between Amarillo and Joplin. However, the two teams will be very familiar with each other by the time July 18 rolls around with eight games scheduled between the two in those 12 days.

Joplin features one of the top American Association pitchers in 32-year-okld Cuban native Jorge Martinez.

Martinez started his pro career last year and owns a 5-2 record and 1.95 earned run average. His ERA ranks fourth in the AA, while his 54 strikeouts is second best of all pitchers in the AA.

Amarillo is coming off a wild July 4th weekend of action.

Playing before 4,676 July 4th fans - easily its largest crowd of the year - Amarillo used a walk-off home run from Stefan Gartrell to defeat Wichita 5-4.

On Sunday Wichita pounded out 14 hits and beat Amarillo 16-7. Wichita's T.J. Mittelstaedt homered twice and drive in six runs.
